Hmmm....I'd have to go with none of the above. We Were Soldiers Once, and Young was turned into one of my all-time favorite movies. Other than that I'd have to say Apocalypse Now.

I really don't see any of those movies you listed as "gun movies". Yes guns are used in all of them but the presence of guns was only incidental to the story.

A good war movie, to me, isn't a "gun movie." I would define a gun movie as being an enjoyable film who's plot centers around the application of firearms.

Off the top of my head, Shooter would be a good gun book turned into a movie.

I'm always inspired Skillet. My imagination demands it.
More than anyone on this forum!
Book 'em,Dano.

Realistically, there are thousands of scripts that have been made into movies.Trying to to narrow those down to 20 is the Impossible Dream.
So y'all gotta lighten up.

I'm curious what you quilify as a gun book/gun movie?

Is there something makes the book or movie have a particular pro-gun theme?

Just trying to understand

If I had to pick one it would be Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War by Mark Bowden, which was made into an excellent movie.

All good movies, but not what I would call "Gun Movies".
Not that it matters.
I voted for The Longest Day, one of my favorite movies.

73 Springfield, I don't know if it was a book but I liked the movie.

I agree with the choice of We Were Soldiers Once, and Young and would also include Blackhawk down. Any mention of Shooter should be banned from all gun boards as it stars anti-gun nut Wahlberg.

None of these strike me as a favorite, although I enjoyed most of them (could not stay awake through the Godfather series and thought that for Whom the Bell Tolls was a horrible adaption that failed to capture the gritty realism of the novel, sorry). Some of them I never saw such as the 1930s version of AQOTWF. Here are the top ten rearranged in the order I liked them most:

Saving Private Ryan 1993
The Longest Day 1962
Apocalypse Now 1979
Goodfellas 1990
Shane 1953
The Dirty Dozen 1967
Bridge on the River Kwai 1957
The Great Escape 1963
Gettysburg 1993
Cool Hand Luke 1966

Bunch of good ones there. But I make a point of watching "Kwai" and "Dozen" once a year.

Another you don't list that is not a classic but a once a year watch for me -- "Heartbreak Ridge". And if you like it too, that doesn't mean we'll be taking warm showers together....

Heartbreak Ridge.I believe Henry had passed by that time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Fonda

He had a fine WWII career.Liberal he was and a terrific patriot he was too.
His best friend, the conservative Jimmy Stewart ,also had a stellar WWII career withh dozens of bombing missions over Germany.

Amazingly ,these 2 diverse political opposites were best friends for life.Stewart taught Fonda how to fly a plane in the mid 1930's.You can't make this stuff up.Life is truly weird.

Rest in peace,Henry and Jimmy. Two fine American hero's.

Wasn't SAVING PRIVATE RYAN made in 1998, not 1993?
I remember because that was the year my good friend Bill Raftery died. Bill was a 2nd Ranger and veteran of that war.
