Slob shooters ruin it for everyone

The Seattle Gun Rights Examiner takes aim at slob shooters over a recreational shooting closure in the national forest

What can ya do? I get cleanup crews together for my public range but sometimes ya just want to cry when you get there.

Of course it doesn't help that I ran a 4x4 out onto the edge of the range to use in picking up the trash (a bunch of shot up computers, I wasn't about to make multiple 200 yard trips with that crap) and the rangers showed up and yelled at me about it. <sigh>.

I hate those folks.
The little range I go to is littered with shot up fire extinguishers, vacuum cleaners and stuff.
If I had a pickup truck, I might consider cleaning it up, but I don't.

I always pack out everything I pack in. Well, except for watermelons.

At my favorite outdoor spot, someone has left an old van to serve as a general target. You can imagine what it looks like now. Next time I'm there, I'll grab a photo.

In the past, I've seen computer printers, televisions, freezer chests, and a big two-door refrigerator there. Someone's doing cleanup at the spot, 'cause the big stuff always disappears after a few weeks. (If any locals have an idea as to what group is doing the cleanups, I'd like to hear about it so I can help! It's the first turnoff on Dosie Pit Road, between Skull Valley and Prescott.)

Thanks, Harley, I appreciate that. Blame it on the smokers. Or Beer drinkers. Or rednecks. Or that subset of people who happens to be all three. Simply amazing.

Geez. I'm all three and I've never been to your range. I've never even been shooting in northern California. Nor have any of my smoking, beer-drinking, redneck friends.

I'm not sure how to respond beyond that... There's a lot of narrow-mindedness in that remark that doesn't set well.

So are you posting on both thr.org and thr.us? or is the board software syncing posts between the two?

I have to agree with PawPaw your generalization is a definite insult to a lot of fine people. All you have to be a slob, is to be ignorant and I find that universal.

Dude, totally out of line here.
I smoke, I drink beer, and I always clean up after myself.
Don't know about that redneck thing though.

Native born New England swamp Yankee here. Political refugee from the PRM. Non-smoker, I prefer my alcohol distilled, not brewed or fermented and some of the best and nicest folks I have met have been rednecks.

But, yes, slob shooters do mess things up for those of us who are responsible. Where's the surprise in this? It is the same as in everything else. Camping, 4 wheeling, hunting and fishing all have their bad apples. Why shouldn't our sport?

I think as a general rule, though, there are fewer of them bad apple types in this sport than in most others I've seen. Just my 2 cents.....

I took a buffalo heart to my local range once....

Ultimately it does no good to whine the range slobs are not going to change. It's not a question of not knowing better they simply don't care.

Good on ya for helping clean up, I've made a decision not to use the local range anymore.

No not narrow, experience is where I see it, ever notice out at those locations, all the beer cans and bottle, shot up and the cigarettes laying around??? Been happening since I can remember.

If it fits, wear it, if not tell me like you have done, freedom of speech is wonderful...

Also tends to be a lot of brass laying around, so I guess we should include all gun owners in the generalization while we're at it.

Just to Vary the Rant...

...where I live and shoot, I don't see much brass lying around but the shotgunners who practice in the forest don't seem inclined to pick up their hulls.

I wouldn't say that smoking or drinking makes one a slob, but slobs are more likely to smoke and drink. Rednecks? I don't know any rednecks here in South Texas. Brownnecks maybe. Local ranges stay pretty clean. Back home in Arkinsaw there's a free public range in the national forest that's generally immaculately clean. Nothing but rednecks shoot there as far as I know.

Maybe it's a Left Coast thing.

A'yep, i'm pretty much a redneck. And smoke. And drink. And all sorts of other terrible things. But I do generally pick up my brass. And trash.

Red face

I don't know what to do about the brass(still thinking about it), but i bet there would be a market for shotgun hulls made out of this. Hmm can't find the melting point for normal hulls might just make a mess in the bore. edit: And shot cups, but i am pretty sure you can already get them

If you want to accept it as a slight against you personally, sorry about that...

That kind of acceptance is not healthy guys. Just shoot back.

I like it from the hip, as a rule, you are not aiming well

I smoke and drink beer responsibly. I don't do either at the range.

One big issue with these slobs is that they're generally not inclined to go to managed ranges precisely because they get kicked out for not cleaning up, or they're not allowed to bring their garbage to shoot it up. When their no-cost, unmanaged places to shoot dry up because of their idiocy, they'll either be forced to show up at the ranges with rules enforced, surreptitiously continue shooting in areas not marked for shooting and face possible prosecution, or stop shooting altogether.

SO. You can either complain and moan about them, or clean up after them and keep those places open. Or you can go to a managed range and pay for some upkeep. Or you can buy some land and make your own range. I dunno, as much as I like to complain about people, it seems like a waste of breath this time around.

10-4. There will never be a shortage of these morons.

BTW - I drink beer, and wine occasional. I smoke occasional, I drive a pickup, and I am certainly classified as a redneck. I am not a slob, I pick up my brass (and other folks brass as well) and leave nothing behind except what was there when I arrived. (Many times less than what was there) Please do not lump all of us BDRNMF's into the same category. Most of the "mess" I see get left behind, is from the city slickers who have no respect for others property. Hey, it's just out in the middle of nowhere, right? Who cares if there is trash left behind, right? Hey, this looks like a good place to dump that dog we got that we don't want to take care of anymore, right? I'll take a redneck over a gel-headed metro-sexual gay looking slicker with earings any day of the year.
