Terrible horrible awful scary inauguration fear!

Parks gun rule prompts inauguration fears
Published: Dec. 27, 2008 at 10:52 AM

WASHINGTON, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Confusion over gun control laws in national parks may mean some attending U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration will bring weapons, officials say.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., and gun control groups say they're worried that because the Bush administration has changed federal regulations to allow people with permits to carry concealed firearms while in national parks, some people coming to the Jan. 20 inauguration outside the Capitol will be packing heat, the Washington publication The Hill reported Saturday.

The rule, however, forbids bringing guns into national parks located within districts that ban concealed weapons, which Washington does. But Norton, a longtime gun control supporter, said confusion about the rule change could make for trouble.

"It is truly frightening to think of what this could mean coming just a couple of weeks before the inauguration," she told The Hill.

Larry Pratt, executive director for the pro-gun rights Gun Owners of America, said Norton's fears are misguided, telling the publication, "People know enough to check on what the rules are."

As if laws forbiding guns in parks would mean anything to an assassin - - or assassins....

Some in Congress are so dense....

And they write law...

God help us.

Washington D.C. has the highest gun related murder rate per capita in the whole nation. If law abiding citizens leave their legal guns at home, there will, undoubtedly still be thousands of illegally owned and carried weapons in the crowd, regardless. The fear that assassins would bring weapons to the inauguration is well founded, but not an unusual occurrence in our nation's capital. If folks don't want to be exposed to that sort of danger, stay home. The whole thing will be on TV and it's warm and dry inside. Otherwise, let the Secret Service and local constabulary earn their pay.

I See This...

...as nothing more than a ploy to push Big Brother into rescinding the new NPS rule. As much as I'd like to be able to carry my firearms legally into Arizona's several national parks and NPS-administered national monuments, I'd be willing to sacrifice this recent victory if it would help show the voting public that the RKBA community was not just crying wolf and give us a chance at reversing the Democratic majority in Congress in 2010.

As to why people like Holmes oppose licensed CCW when they come from violence-plagued communities like DC, John Ross, author of Unintended Consequences dealth with this issue back in 2003.

I don't think we should give up anything

but don't worry I'm sure we'll see enough "taking soon" and rescinding the new NPS rule will be on the list.

besides, a REAL assassin would be alot more creative than a gun. There are WAAAAAAAAY more and less traceable ways to do things that an assasin would choose giving him
A) escape options
B) anonymity
c) no traceability
But I'm sure he'll have the bulletproof hamster cage up like he did for his victory speech in chicago. so never fear little Democrack Chicken Littles the messiah will be well protected.

Exactly. Left, right, center... the sustained assault on our rights is certainly not limited to only one side of the aisle.

Look for example at the final vote tally for the amendments to FISA letting the telecoms off the hook for their illegal acts and prohibiting the states from doing anything about it. The yeas were decidedly higher on the "rightist" side of the aisle.

So anyway back to the article: more irrational fearmongering. Nothing new here... move along.

Yeah, if only that rule hadn't been changed, there would be no risk of any president being assassinated ever. Oh wait...

Irrational fears on another lefties part. There are going to be so many cops there, that anyone doing anything stupid is just as likely to have his ass kicked by a local cop or by an outside of DC cop who is there on loan for the inauguration.

I live in the outskirts of DC and I for one will be watching the news reports of the lawbreaking to come during the inauguration. It'll be fascinating.

Left/Right is one scale. Authoritarian/libertarian is another. There are authoritarians on the right, but it is difficult to be a leftist and libertarian. Leftist "principles" require comformance, which must be enforced by authority.

Nope, that was everybody. Of course, this was also a month after the worst enemy action on American soil since December 7, 1941, and after everyone learned that it was illegal for the CIA to pass information to the FBI. Those facts tend to sway people.

You can thank the leftists for that last tidbit, by the way.

I think a big part of what they're talking about being "frightening" and whatnot is simply a matter of - there seems to be some ambiguity in terms of what the law is. That can lead to some interesting scenarios - especially when you start throwing in the SS, and i'm sure a number of security checkpoints. Scenarios that I for one - would not want to be anywhere near.

Since the new regulations only allow concealed carry in states where state law provides for concealed carry I'm not sure what the problem is. The fools at Yosemite are worried that those nasty CCW people will be packin' there, but it's clearly illegal. Of course they'd have to know how to read and understand English to know that.

I'm surprised that people think that criminals don't obey ALL laws. That's an amazing statement! Maybe someone should 'splain that to our lawmakers who seem not to understand the nature of criminals....
